Minister Choi Vows Government Support for the Film Industry
Calls for Expanded Investment and Support for Independent Films
Choi Hwiyoung, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, has pledged that the government will support the film industry.
Choi Hwiyoung, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, is discussing support measures for the recovery of the Korean film industry at the "Film Industry Communication Meeting" held on the 14th at the Film Education Support Center of the Korean Film Council in Mapo-gu, Seoul.
On August 14, at the Film Education Support Center of the Korean Film Council in Mapo-gu, Seoul, Minister Choi met with director Yoon Je-kyun, director Heo Gayoung, Kim Wonguk, CEO of Hybe Media Corp, Lee Dongha, head of the Korean Film Producers Association, and others at the "Film Industry Communication Meeting." They discussed the current state of the Korean film industry and deliberated on policy directions for the film sector.
Film industry professionals unanimously stated that, for the Korean film industry to make a new leap forward, government support across the entire industry must be further strengthened. In particular, they stressed the need to expand support at the initial planning and development stages of films, and to continue support for mid-budget film production and international co-productions. Additionally, they requested that the government take a proactive role in revitalizing investment, including through funds.
In response, Minister Choi said, "This is the last opportunity to restore the ecosystem of the Korean film industry," and added, "Based on feedback from the field, we will continue efforts to revive the film industry through production support and expanded investment. We will also increase support for independent and art films to ensure diversity."
