On August 13, lawyer Lee Chanjin was nominated as the new governor of the Financial Supervisory Service.
Kim Byunghwan, chairman of the Financial Services Commission, recommended Lee Chanjin as the successor to former governor Lee Bokhyun after a resolution at a temporary meeting of the commission on the same day. The governor of the Financial Supervisory Service is recommended by the chairman of the Financial Services Commission and appointed by the president.
Born in Seoul in 1964, Lee Chanjin graduated from Hongik University High School and the Department of Law at Seoul National University. He took the 28th bar exam and completed the 18th class of the Judicial Research and Training Institute alongside President Lee Jaemyung.
In particular, he was active in the Labor Law Society together with President Lee. Lee Chanjin also served as legal counsel for President Lee in the Ssangbangwool North Korea remittance case and represented him in the second trial (appellate and remand trial) of the Public Official Election Act case.
Lee Chanjin is considered to share a similar orientation with President Lee, as he is also known for his work as a civic activist. During the Roh Moo-hyun administration, he served as a civilian member of the Ministry of National Defense Truth and Reconciliation Committee in 2005. He later served as vice-chairman and then chairman of the executive committee at People’s Solidarity for Participatory Democracy (PSPD) in 2010. At Lawyers for a Democratic Society (Minbyun), he held positions as public interest committee chair and vice president.
Currently, he serves as head of the first social division at the National Planning Committee, which is responsible for outlining the key policy agenda of the Lee Jaemyung administration. During President Lee's candidacy, Lee Chanjin was an outspoken advocate for strengthening public healthcare, one of the main healthcare pledges. As a member of the National Pension Fund Management Committee, he demonstrated a strong interest in pension reform, health and welfare, and public healthcare. His work at the National Planning Committee’s first social division, where he mainly addresses public healthcare, the 4.5-day workweek, and labor issues, also reflects these interests.
An industry official commented, "Although Lee Chanjin has not worked directly in the financial sector, he has made numerous policy-related decisions as a long-standing member of the National Pension Fund Management Committee. He is highly regarded for his expertise in areas such as commercial law reform, minority shareholder protection, and the asset management industry."
