Message Deletion Window Extended to 24 Hours
Identity of Message Deleter No Longer Revealed in Group Chats
The time limit for deleting mistakenly sent messages on KakaoTalk will be significantly extended from the previous 5 minutes to 24 hours. In addition, when a message is deleted in a group chat, it will no longer be possible to identify who deleted the message.
On August 13, Kakao announced that it has been rolling out a KakaoTalk update containing these improvements since August 12.
With this update, the period during which messages can be deleted on KakaoTalk has been extended from 5 minutes to up to 24 hours. Previously, messages could not be deleted if more than 5 minutes had passed since they were sent.
A new measure has also been added to prevent users from knowing who deleted a message. The display format for deleted messages has been changed from the previous speech bubble style to a feed style. Previously, deleted messages remained in a speech bubble format, making it possible to identify who deleted them, but after the update, this information will no longer be available.
The KakaoTalk version (25.7.0) update featuring the improved message deletion function has been rolling out sequentially since August 12. It will be applied gradually depending on the device and operating system (OS) in use.
A Kakao representative explained, "We have significantly improved the message deletion feature to reduce the burden of conversations and create a smoother communication environment."
Meanwhile, KakaoTalk's message deletion feature was first introduced in August 2018. At that time, the focus was on partially addressing sender mistakes, and the deletion time limit was set at 5 minutes.
