To mark the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day this year, the Gyeonggi Provincial Government will hold a commemorative ceremony under the theme "The Light We Regained, Right and True" at the Grand Theater of the Gyeonggi Arts Center in Suwon on August 15, with participation from local residents.
Approximately 1,000 people, including descendants of independence activists and members of the local community, will attend the event. Seven descendants of independence activists currently residing in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and China have also been invited.
The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. with a performance by the 60-member Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra, followed by a media dance performance that combines contemporary and Korean traditional dance.
Afterward, descendants of independence activists from both overseas and Korea will enter together to participate in the national ceremony, and attendees will watch the 80th Liberation Day theme video, "The Light We Regained, Right and True."
The program will continue with a commemorative address by Kim Hodong, head of the Gyeonggi branch of the Liberation Association, followed by the presentation of awards and honors to independence activists, and a congratulatory speech by Kim Dongyeon, Governor of Gyeonggi Province.
In particular, Gyeonggi Province will unveil the final three independence activists among the 80 "Independence Activists of the Year" selected for the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day since March 1, who have not yet been publicly announced.
The life stories and achievements of the "80th Hero" will be highlighted through interviews with descendants and an original musical performance.
For the final stage, members of the children's choir, musical cast, and the Gyeonggi Philharmonic will collaborate, while photos and videos of all 80 independence activists will be displayed on a large screen to honor the significance of Liberation Day.
Cho Byungrae, Director-General of Autonomy Administration at Gyeonggi Province, stated, "On the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day, we hope this will be an opportunity to honor the will of our forebears and foster a shared, accurate understanding of history among residents," adding, "We will continue to promote a variety of initiatives to uphold the values of Liberation."
