Cho Hyun to Visit Ulsan Shipyard with Joseph Yun
Prepares for MASGA Project and Checks APEC Summit Readiness in Gyeongju
Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Hyun will visit the HD Hyundai shipyard in Ulsan on August 13, accompanied by Joseph Yun, the Acting U.S. Ambassador to South Korea. This visit comes as South Korea and the United States are preparing to launch a large-scale shipbuilding cooperation project, known as 'MASGA.'
Lee Jaewoong, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced this during a regular briefing on August 12. He stated, "(Minister Cho and Acting Ambassador Joseph Yun) will inspect the shipbuilding site and key facilities at the shipyard, and will directly listen to the voices of businesses on-site." He added, "The two countries will seek opportunities to expand cooperation in the shipbuilding sector and discuss ways to support the Korean shipbuilding industry."
Later in the afternoon, Minister Cho will visit Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, the host city of the 2025 APEC Summit. The purpose of this visit is to review preparations for the summit, which is now about three months away. The spokesperson explained, "Minister Cho plans to inspect major facilities, including the summit venue and media center currently being established at the HICO Convention Center in Gyeongju, as well as candidate accommodations for government and business delegations."
This visit is seen as part of the preparations for the MASGA project. The MASGA project is a large-scale cooperation program in which the South Korean government and shipbuilding industry are participating to help revitalize the U.S. shipbuilding sector. The related investment is estimated to reach $150 billion.
