Construction to Begin Early Next Year
Business Agreement Signed with Seongdong-Gwangjin Office of Education
Gwangjin District in Seoul (Mayor Kim Kyungho) announced on the 11th that it had signed a business agreement on the 7th in the Planning Situation Room of Gwangjin District Office with the Seongdong-Gwangjin Office of Education (Superintendent Lee Geungyeon) to establish a cooperative framework for the 'Yonggok Elementary and Middle School Rainbow Staircase Accessibility Facility Installation Project.'

The 'Rainbow Staircase,' located on the grounds of the Office of Education at 18-58, Junggok 4-dong, is a high-slope school route with an incline of over 35 degrees and more than 70 steps. Pedestrians with limited mobility, including people with disabilities, the elderly, and students, have continuously experienced inconvenience, and despite being a major school route used by an average of over 500 people during school commute hours each day, the lack of accessibility facilities has raised significant safety concerns.
In response, the district applied for the Seoul Metropolitan Government's 'Accessibility Facility Installation Project for Mobility-Impaired Persons in High-Elevation Areas' and was finally selected in June. It has secured a total of 1,964 million won in city funding to install a 26-passenger vertical elevator and a walkway.
According to the agreement, the district will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and management of the facility, while the Office of Education has agreed to provide administrative support, including approval for the installation, exemption of rental fees, and measures to ensure student safety.
Going forward, the district plans to prioritize school commute safety and the protection of the educational environment as it carries out the construction. The design will be completed within this year, with construction scheduled to begin early next year.
