Jung Chungrae: "Yoon Sukyeol's Crimes Are Graver Than the Unified Progressive Party Incident"
Na Kyungwon: "The Unified Progressive Party Tried to Overthrow the Republic of Korea"
Na Kyungwon, a member of the People Power Party, sharply criticized Democratic Party Leader Jung Chungrae, who claimed to have taken strong action against independent lawmaker Lee Choonseok over recent allegations of stock trading under borrowed names. Na accused Jung of "low-level political tactics that cleverly mix lies and agitation." On the 10th, through her social networking service (SNS), Na addressed Jung, stating, "You say you took strong action against Lee Choonseok, but expelling a lawmaker who had already left the party is nothing more than a show of cutting ties." She added, "Comparing the Lee Choonseok gate?an incident involving real-time stock trading using inside information under borrowed names?with the People Power Party is a crude attempt to water down the issue."
Previously, Jung Chungrae had asserted that he had taken strong measures against Lee Choonseok, who was embroiled in allegations of stock trading under borrowed names, and called on the People Power Party to address its own "internal issues." He also argued that, in light of the case of the former Unified Progressive Party, which was dissolved for plotting and inciting rebellion, the crimes of People Power Party member Yoon Sukyeol were even graver than those of the former Unified Progressive Party.
In response, Na Kyungwon stated, "It is a serious fallacy to apply the logic of the Unified Progressive Party's dissolution to our party. The Unified Progressive Party's platform and purpose were fundamentally aimed at overthrowing the Republic of Korea." She continued, "To compare this to our party, which has defended the Constitution and liberal democracy of Korea, is an insult to the people and a distortion of history." Na further criticized, "If you truly believe that shameless crimes that harm the nation and its people must be strictly punished, you should first oppose the pardons of Cho Kuk and Yoon Mihyang." She added, "Do not speak of justice and the Constitution with your cowardly, hypocritical, and self-contradictory DNA. Is Jung Chungrae's style of politics to keep silent on what must be said, indulge in self-praise, and focus only on extreme politics aimed at destroying the opposition?"
An Cheolsoo, a candidate for the People Power Party leadership, also criticized Jung Chungrae, saying, "Jung Chungrae, keep your mouth shut. As long as An Cheolsoo is here, there will be no dissolution of the party." He also urged, "Lee Jaemyung and the Democratic Party should not forget the warning from the Constitutional Court." This refers to the Constitutional Court's decision on April 4, 2024, in case 2024Hun-Na8, where, while dismissing President Yoon Sukyeol, the court pointed out in its decision that "since the respondent took office, the opposition party holding a majority in the National Assembly has repeatedly exercised its powers unilaterally," and that "in less than two years and seven months, 22 motions for impeachment have been submitted."
