23 Citizens File Suit... First Hearing After 8 Months
Plaintiffs Win in Similar Case at Seoul Central District Court
The damages lawsuit filed against former President Yoon Seokyeol, who declared the unconstitutional 12·3 Martial Law, will proceed in earnest starting in October.
On the 9th of last month, former President Yoon Seokyoul entered the Seoul Central District Court in Seocho-gu, Seoul, to undergo a pre-arrest detention hearing (warrant review).
According to the legal community on the 9th, Judge Lee Miju, presiding over the 25th Civil Division of the Gwangju District Court, has set the first hearing date for October 21 in the damages suit filed by 23 Gwangju citizens against former President Yoon. The plaintiffs are demanding compensation of 100,000 won per person for psychological damages suffered as a result of the martial law.
This case marks the beginning of the trial eight months after the Gwangju Women Lawyers Association filed the lawsuit on behalf of the citizens. In their complaint, the plaintiffs argued that they experienced shock and fear due to the unconstitutional and unlawful martial law imposed in the middle of the night, during which armed soldiers were deployed to the National Assembly and other locations.
Previously, the Seoul Central District Court ruled in favor of the plaintiffs in a similar damages suit filed by 104 citizens last month, ordering former President Yoon to pay 100,000 won to each plaintiff.
