Gimhae Mayor Hong Taeyong Requests Support for 'National Smart Logistics Platform' from Oceans Minister

On August 7, Hong Taeyong, Mayor of Gimhae, Gyeongnam, met with Jeon Jaesu, Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, at the Seoul office of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and requested comprehensive government support for Gimhae City's key project, the National Smart Logistics Platform Project.

Mayor Hong explained the necessity of the project to Minister Jeon, stating, "The project site is strategically located to serve as a base for advancing into the Arctic route, which is a policy pledge of the new government."

He also requested that the project be included in the National Logistics Master Plan (2026-2035), which is currently being jointly formulated by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.

In addition, he proposed the prompt enactment of special laws related to the inclusion of the project in national policy tasks.

The National Smart Logistics Platform Project is included in the President's regional pledges and, in July, Gyeongnam Province and Busan City each submitted the project to the National Policy Planning Committee as a candidate for national policy tasks, as part of a supra-regional initiative.

The project site encompasses the areas of Hwamok-dong in Gimhae and Jukdong-dong in Gangseo-gu, Busan.

Last year, the governors of Gyeongnam Province and Busan City announced a joint agreement for mutual development that included this project. Currently, Gimhae City is working with relevant departments to establish a practical consultative body to advance the project.

The city is currently anticipating the passage of two special laws pending in the National Assembly: the Special Act on the Designation and Operation of International Logistics Promotion Zones and the Special Act on the Creation of Busan Global Hub City.

The city expects that, if these two major logistics-related special laws are passed, the project site will become a global advanced integrated logistics industrial city based on a tri-port system linked to the Arctic route.

Mayor Hong stated, "For the development of the southeastern region, which is one of the five key regions in the 5 Poles 3 Special Zones strategy for balanced national development, I am confident that the National Smart Logistics Platform Project, which connects the Arctic route and the tri-port system, will serve as a catalyst. We will continue to push forward unwaveringly to secure Gimhae's future competitiveness."
