Korail: 400,000 Benefited from Pregnant Women and Multiple Children Discounts in First Half of Year

Korea Railroad Corporation (Korail) is receiving positive feedback for its support programs for pregnant women and families with multiple children.

On August 6, Korail announced that, in the first half of this year, 400,000 pregnant women and members of families with multiple children received discounts through the "Mam Pyeonhan Korail" and "Dajanuh Haengbok" programs.

"Mam Pyeonhan Korail" and "Dajanuh Haengbok" are types of discount programs that have been in operation since 2015.

Under the "Mam Pyeonhan Korail" program, when a pregnant woman uses a train, both the pregnant woman and one accompanying person receive a 40% discount on fares for all trains, including KTX, and are exempt from KTX first-class surcharges.

In particular, the number of users in the first half of this year reached 264,000, which is more than five times higher than the 47,000 users recorded in the first half of last year.

This significant increase appears to be largely due to last year's expansion of eligible trains for discounts, from only KTX first-class (surcharge exemption) to all trains, including KTX standard class, Saemaeul, and Mugunghwa, with a 40% fare discount.

The "Dajanuh Haengbok" program provides KTX fare discounts when three or more family members, including at least two children under the age of 25, travel together. In the first half of this year, the number of users totaled 134,000, nearly double the 71,000 users in the first half of last year.

Since last year, Korail has improved the discount system by increasing the discount rate according to the number of children. Families with two children receive a 30% discount on adult fares, while families with three or more children receive a 50% discount on adult fares.

In addition, Korail plans to further improve train accessibility within this year by designating certain seats on KTX and regular trains as exclusive for pregnant women and members of families with multiple children during peak demand times, such as weekends.

Lee Minseong, Head of Customer Marketing at Korail, stated, "Korail independently operates birth encouragement programs to help pregnant women and families with multiple children use the railway without burden," adding, "Korail will continue to fulfill its social responsibilities as a public corporation to help overcome the low birthrate crisis."
