Establishment of National Veterans Affairs and Honam Development Committees within the Party
K-Steel Act to Be Promoted as Official Party Platform
On August 6, Jeong Chungrae, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, appointed Seo Samseok as the Supreme Council member by nomination. Regarding the Supreme Council member selected from among ordinary party members, which Jeong had pledged, it was decided that the selection would be made through a public audition and a vote by rights-holding party members.
At the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly on this day, Jeong stated, "Just now, in a closed session of the Supreme Council, I nominated Representative Seo as the appointed Supreme Council member." He added, "Honam is the root of the Democratic Party, the birthplace of democracy, and the sacred ground of Korea's democratization," and expressed his expectation that "the history and spirit of Honam will be reflected throughout the party's operations."
In addition, the Democratic Party decided to add the National Veterans Affairs Special Committee and the Honam Development Special Committee as standing special committees within the party.

The plan for selecting the Supreme Council member from among ordinary party members was also made public. Jeong explained, "As promised at the party convention, we will begin the open recruitment process for the Supreme Council member from among ordinary party members." He continued, "Eligible candidates will be those who, during the period of rights-holding party membership, have no experience running for party or public office and have received recommendations from at least 100 party members. A separate task force will conduct the first document screening, followed by a public audition broadcast live online." The public audition will select candidates based on 50% jury evaluation and 40% party member opinion polls. After presentations of policy positions and other procedures, the final selection will be made by a vote of rights-holding party members.
The Democratic Party also announced appointments to party positions. Han Dongsu, former Director of Inspection at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, was appointed as Chairperson of the Ethics Tribunal; Kim Hyun and Jeon Yonggi as Co-Chairs of the National Communication Committee; Lim Ohkyung as Director of the Civil Complaints Office under the direct supervision of the party leader; Park Hongbae and Kim Hyunjung as Co-Chairs of the External Cooperation Committee; Lee Sungyun as Chairperson of the Legal Committee; Park Gyuntaek as Head of the Ethics Inspection Team; and Kim Jeongho as Head of the Special Advisory Group to the party leader.
Additionally, the Democratic Party decided to promote the so-called K-Steel Act, a steel industry support bill proposed by 106 lawmakers from both the ruling and opposition parties, as an official party platform.
