"Fire Breaks Out on Fishing Vessel 28 Minutes After Departure Near Wando"

Engine Room Engulfed in Flames, Crew Extinguishes Fire Themselves
Coast Guard Implements Measures to Prevent Reignition... Begins Investigation into "Cause"

A fire broke out on a fishing vessel that was moving for fishing operations near the waters off Wando County, South Jeolla Province. Fortunately, the crew responded quickly and extinguished the fire themselves, and no casualties were reported.

According to the Wando Maritime Police Station on August 5, at approximately 10:58 a.m. that day, an unexplained fire occurred on the 40-ton coastal squid jigging vessel A, about 5.1 kilometers southeast of Wando Port. At the time, there were a total of 12 people on board, including the captain and crew members.

It has been determined that the initial fire on vessel A started in the engine room while the vessel was sailing from Wando Port for fishing operations. The fire was extinguished by the crew themselves after a swift response using portable fire extinguishers available on board.

Immediately after receiving the fire report, the maritime police dispatched all available resources to the scene, including patrol vessels, the local coastal rescue boat, and the Wando rescue team.

Upon arrival at the scene, the Wando maritime police confirmed the status of the fire suppression on board, then promptly evacuated all crew members to safe locations such as the bow deck. They then thoroughly inspected for any remaining embers and implemented additional safety measures to prevent the fire from reigniting.

A maritime police official stated, "The exact cause of the fire will be determined through on-site inspections by the maritime police and related agencies," and added, "It is fortunate that all crew members were safely rescued, which prevented any major damage."
