With just one month remaining until the opening of the 'Gwangju 2025 Modern World (Para) Archery Championships' scheduled for September 5, the city of Gwangju is accelerating its preparations for the event. Final preparations are being made for the competition venues, transportation, accommodation, and other essential aspects.
Under the theme 'The Echo of Peace,' the championship is expected to host top athletes from approximately 90 countries worldwide. Around 1,300 athletes, including both able-bodied and para-athletes, will participate, delivering a message of unity through sports. Notably, the finals will be held at the 5·18 Democracy Plaza, serving as a symbolic stage to showcase Gwangju's spirit of democracy to the world.
To prepare for the event, the city has significantly upgraded the archery venue infrastructure. The competition area has been expanded by 20 meters in width, and dedicated zones for wheelchair users have been established, reflecting efforts to create an inclusive sporting environment.
For the convenience of the athletes, 12 hotels with over 800 rooms have been secured, and a total of 372 buses will be operated. Special vehicles have also been prepared specifically for para-athletes.
The organizing committee is conducting advance ticket sales for the event through the official website and NOL Interpark Ticket until August 8. During the pre-sale period, tickets can be purchased at a 20% discount compared to the regular price.
Emphasizing environmental values, the event has adopted the slogan 'No Plastic, Yes 966' and established a variety of eco-friendly programs. These include encouraging the use of tumblers, minimizing single-use items, and using recycled cans, all aimed at promoting sustainable practices.
In addition, 15 athletes from 10 less-developed archery nations have been invited to broaden international sports exchanges and provide comprehensive support. Each athlete will receive support equivalent to 4 million KRW per person, covering living expenses, airfare, accommodation, and equipment, to help strengthen their capabilities.
On August 11, a volunteer inauguration ceremony will be held at the main conference hall of Gwangju City Hall, with over 300 participants expected. Volunteers will be assigned to various areas, including event operation and support, safety management, and interpretation services.
Jeon Eunok, Director of Culture and Sports, stated, "With only 30 days left until the event, we will demonstrate Gwangju's status as a global sports city through thorough preparation," and added, "In celebration of the 2025 Year of Visiting Gwangju, we will warmly welcome guests from around the world together with our citizens."
Lee Yeon, Secretary-General of the Organizing Committee, said, "We will use this event as an opportunity for city marketing so that more people from Korea and abroad can learn about and visit Gwangju, and we will prepare thoroughly in every aspect." He also requested, "We ask for active participation and support from citizens, including coming to the venues to cheer for the athletes."
Meanwhile, as of August 4, for this year's Gwangju World Archery Championships, 739 athletes from 76 countries have registered for the able-bodied event, while 427 athletes from 43 countries have registered for the para event. The final entry list is expected to be confirmed on August 15.
