Samsung Display significantly increased its shipments of medium and large-sized organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels in the second quarter of this year. With orders from Apple and global PC manufacturers reflected in the results, shipments are expected to continue rising in the second half of the year.
According to market research firm UBI Research on August 5, Samsung Display shipped a total of 4.9 million medium and large-sized OLED panels in the second quarter. This represents a 58.2% increase compared to the first quarter, when 3.1 million units were shipped. By product category, notebook panels accounted for more than half of the shipments, reaching 2.5 million units, more than double the previous quarter's figure.
UBI Research projected that shipments of OLED panels for notebooks will reach 10 million units this year. In particular, starting next year, Samsung Display's two-stack tandem structure OLED panels will be supplied for Apple's MacBook Pro, making it highly likely that annual shipments will expand to over 15 million units.
Shipments of OLED panels for monitors also increased by 44% during the same period, reaching 700,000 units. The total shipment volume for the year is expected to reach approximately 2.5 million units. Shipments of OLED panels for tablet PCs, automobiles, and TVs also saw slight increases.
A representative from UBI Research stated, "Samsung Display experienced a temporary decline in shipments in the first quarter due to weakened demand for notebooks and tablets, but returned to normal growth in the second quarter," and added, "In the second half of the year, the launch of new iPad Pro models and expanded supply to DHL (Dell, HP, Lenovo) will drive further shipment growth."
