Woman in Her 20s Arrested on Child Abuse Charges
A two-year-old girl was found inside a suitcase stored in the luggage compartment of a bus in northern New Zealand, shocking the public. Local police have arrested a New Zealand woman on charges of child neglect and have launched an investigation.
On August 4 (local time), multiple foreign media outlets, including the BBC in the UK and CNN in the US, reported that New Zealand police arrested a 27-year-old woman, referred to as Ms. A, on charges of child abuse and neglect. The incident occurred at a bus stop in Kaiwaka, north of Auckland. At the time, a passenger requested access to the luggage compartment, and as the bus driver was inspecting the area, they detected movement inside a suitcase stored in the compartment. Inside the suitcase was a two-year-old girl, who was reportedly suffering from a high fever but fortunately showed no signs of external injury.
As a result, New Zealand police arrested a woman on charges of child abuse and neglect, and she is scheduled to appear in court on August 5. The incident took place on a vehicle operated by InterCity, one of New Zealand's major long-distance bus companies. The company allows children under the age of three to travel for free if they are seated on the lap of an adult guardian.
The child has been transferred to a hospital and is currently in stable condition. In accordance with local law, the identities of the woman and her relationship to the child have not been disclosed.
