The Birthplace of the Anti-Japanese Movement...
Embodying the Aspiration for National Enlightenment and Restoration of Sovereignty
The Daegu Regional Office of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (Director Kim Jongsul) has selected 'Joyang Hall' in Dong-gu, Daegu as the Memorial Facility of the Month for August, so that local residents can become more familiar with memorial sites.
Joyang Hall, which means 'Be the Light of Joseon,' is an educational hall established in October 1922 at Dalseong Park. It was founded by national leaders such as Seo Sangil, who aimed to enlighten the people and restore national sovereignty.
At the time, organizations such as the Daegu Club, Daegu Women's Youth Association, Daegu Sports Association, and rural volunteer groups were housed in the hall, making it the center of the people's enlightenment movement. However, only seven years after its construction, it was identified as a base for the anti-Japanese movement in the Yeongnam region, leading to the arrest of patriots and its requisition by the Joseon Governor-General's Office for use as the Daegu Municipal Library. In this way, Joyang Hall shared in the hardships and fate of the nation until liberation.
In 1984, Daegu City relocated and restored Joyang Hall to Mangudang Park in Hyomok-dong, and since 1987, it has been used as the office of the Daegu branch of the Liberation Association. Currently, portraits of patriots, as well as various materials related to the independence movement and anti-Japanese struggle?such as the words of Yun Bonggil and Dosan Ahn Changho?are preserved there.
On May 9, 2005, the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs designated Joyang Hall as a memorial facility to widely promote its historical significance.
The Daegu Regional Veterans Affairs Office has designated 'Joyang Hall' as the Memorial Facility of August.
