The police are continuing intensive crackdowns on drunk driving in the Seoul area.

On August 3, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced that it would continue to conduct drunk driving crackdowns, changing the times and locations.
Although traffic accidents caused by drunk driving have recently decreased, drunk driving remains a serious crime that threatens lives, so the police plan to maintain a strong stance on enforcement. In the first half of this year, there were 731 drunk driving traffic accidents in Seoul, which is a 23.2% decrease compared to the average for the first half of 2022 to 2024.
Since July 14, the police have been conducting crackdowns at least three times a week during the summer vacation season, when awareness about drunk driving may weaken, focusing on areas such as Hangang Park, expressways, and entertainment districts. These operations will continue until August 24.
Near elementary schools, the police have been conducting daytime crackdowns on drunk driving during school commute hours once a week, and from March until July 22, they caught 73 drivers who were driving under the influence due to hangovers.
To eradicate drunk driving, the police plan to establish a collaborative promotion system with local governments and conduct educational campaigns in parallel.
A police official stated, "Drunk driving is a crime that can result in not only casualties but also severe punishment for the driver. It is important to create an environment where people do not drive under the influence regardless of police crackdowns."
