Seoul Grand Park Hosts Summer Survival Event for Animals
920kg of Special Meals...
"Nutritious Foods Rich in Vitamins and Protein"
As the sweltering heat continues in Seoul, with the city's highest temperatures hovering around 37 degrees Celsius, Seoul Grand Park is providing special summer meals to help animals cope with the heat. On August 1, the Seoul Metropolitan Government and Seoul Grand Park announced the launch of the 'Seoul Grand Park Animals' Summer Survival' event.
To help animals boost their immunity and overcome heat stress during the summer, special supplies of high-moisture and nutrient-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables, as well as high-protein foods like live rockfish and beef liver, will be provided.
The special meals total 920 kilograms, including protein-rich items such as beef shank and chicken, and will be distributed to 15 animal enclosures according to each animal's dietary preferences.
For the Siberian tigers housed in the carnivore section, electrolyte- and vitamin-rich ice cakes have been provided. The tigers can eat the ice to lower their body temperature and replenish moisture. In addition, a customized health meal consisting of protein- and calcium-rich beef shank and raw chicken is also offered.
At the large animal house, where three Asian elephants of various ages reside, the dedicated elephant keepers throw summer treats such as sugar cane into the large pool. This is intended to encourage the elephants to dive into the cool water to retrieve the sunken treats.
For the hippopotamuses, a variety of fruits including watermelon are provided to boost their vitality during the summer. For the small meerkats, keepers hang raw chicken from specially made structures to encourage active foraging behavior.
The Seoul Grand Park officials stated that the animals have become significantly weakened due to the ongoing heatwave, which is why these special nutritious meals have been prepared. They added that they will continue to carefully monitor the animals and provide a variety of enrichment foods to help them stay healthy.
