KMI Launches Official Website 100 Days Ahead of 2025 International Conference on Fishing Communities Opening

Official preparations begin for a global fishing community cooperation platform
Over 40 countries to participate in Incheon in November

The Korea Maritime Institute (KMI), led by President Cho Jeonghee, announced on August 1 that it has launched the official website for the '2025 International Conference on Fishing Communities', marking 100 days before the event and beginning full-scale preparations.

This year marks the third edition of the International Conference on Fishing Communities, which will be held in Incheon for four days from November 9 to 12. The event is co-hosted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Korea Maritime Institute.

This conference will serve as a global platform for policy diplomacy, bringing together not only domestic stakeholders from industry, academia, research, and government, but also international organizations such as the FAO, UNESCAP, and the World Bank, as well as fishing communities from over 40 countries worldwide. The main objective is to explore strategies for mutual growth and cooperation between nations and regions.

The main theme of this year's conference is 'One Ocean, One Community: The Future of Fishing Villages Connecting Regions, People, and the Environment'. The event will operate as the world's largest open platform for fishing communities, where communities and fishers take the lead in discussing sustainable development and global cooperation.

The main programs will include the opening and closing ceremonies, a meeting of national representatives, sessions on cooperation and solidarity between countries and regions, strengthening the roles of young and female fishers, the future of fisheries resources and fishing communities, responses to the climate crisis, fishing village tourism, and Blue Ports, among other official and collaborative sessions. In addition, supplementary events such as exhibitions, promotional booths, and on-site tours will also be held.

The newly revamped official website offers an archive of materials from previous events, participant registration, introductions to major programs, newsletter subscriptions, and opportunities for sponsorship. It is available in four languages: English, Spanish, French, and Korean.

Cho Jeonghee, President of KMI, stated, "The International Conference on Fishing Communities will become a venue for international solidarity to address the challenges faced by fishing communities worldwide." She added, "Through this conference, we aim to seek future visions and solutions for fishing communities and to share their diverse values and appeal with the public."
