Laying the Foundation for Carbon Neutrality and Regional Energy Self-Sufficiency
On August 1, Pohang Mayor Lee Kangdeok presided over the August extended executive meeting in the city hall's main conference room, emphasizing the need to make every effort to promote major new growth projects that will drive regional development for future generations.
On the 1st, the expanded executive meeting for August, chaired by Mayor Kangdeok Lee of Pohang, was held at the City Hall. Provided by Pohang City
The meeting began with themed reports on the "Pohang City Distributed Energy Strategy" from the Hydrogen Energy Industry Division and the "Pohang City Complex Marine Leisure Tourism City Development Plan" from the Urban Planning Division, followed by reports on key current issues.
On this day, Mayor Lee requested that every effort be made to successfully implement the specialized distributed energy zone in order to achieve carbon neutrality and regional energy self-sufficiency.
He also addressed the final selection of the national public offering project for the complex marine leisure tourism city, which is valued at a total of 1.3 trillion won. He stated, "This is a valuable achievement gained through the combined efforts of local members, in addition to strategically attracting private investment and establishing a marine leisure tourism base during the 6th to 8th terms of Pohang's elected administration." He further urged, "Let us pool all our capabilities so that Pohang can leap forward as Korea's leading complex marine leisure tourism city."
He also requested that efforts be focused on expanding stay-type tourism content and accelerating the transition to an urban-marine linked tourism city.
In particular, with regard to the recent conclusion of the Korea-US tariff negotiations, he noted that steel item tariffs will remain at 50%, which is expected to cause difficulties. Therefore, he called for the prompt designation of Pohang as a preemptive response region for industrial crisis and urged the government and National Assembly to work together on enacting a special law to support the steel industry and overcoming the crisis, stressing the need for an all-out response.
He also pointed out that, as confirmed by last month's nationwide heavy rain damage, summer disasters are becoming increasingly severe. He urged all departments, related agencies, and the voluntary disaster prevention corps to share response plans for weather disasters such as typhoons, torrential rains, and heat waves, and to thoroughly strengthen protection for vulnerable groups and on-site response capabilities.
In addition, regarding the preparation of the 2026 budget proposal, he instructed that the recovery of the people's livelihood and economy be set as the top priority. He directed all departments to strengthen cooperation with relevant central government agencies, make active efforts to secure national funding, and enhance competitiveness in new industry sectors in line with national policy tasks.
Mayor Lee Kangdeok stated, "Let us do our utmost to ensure the smooth implementation of key projects that determine Pohang's future competitiveness, bring about positive changes in the city, and focus all administrative capabilities on achieving tangible results that citizens can truly feel."
