Meta Establishes Superintelligence Research Lab and Recruits AI Talent
Zuckerberg Outlines Vision for Superintelligent AI in Facebook Video
"Developing AI to Assist Daily Life, Not Just Automate Labor"
In June, Zuckerberg announced plans to establish the "Meta Superintelligence Research Lab" dedicated to developing superintelligent AI. Since then, Meta has invested astronomical sums to recruit dozens of AI talents from industry leaders such as ScaleAI, OpenAI, and Apple. Superintelligent AI refers to AI that surpasses human intelligence.
Zuckerberg explained, "Meta will take a different approach from other companies in the industry when it comes to developing superintelligent AI," and clarified, "Rather than focusing AI on labor automation, we will develop it to assist people's personal lives." He continued, "The pace of AI advancement is accelerating, and in recent months, we have begun to see early signs of AI systems improving themselves. Now, the development of superintelligence is within sight, but the big question remains: 'What will we use superintelligence for?'"
He emphasized, "A far more meaningful change in our lives will come from everyone having their own personal superintelligence that helps them achieve their goals, create what they want in the world, become better friends, and grow into the person they aspire to be. The next 10 years will be a critical period that determines the direction this technology will take. We will decide whether superintelligence becomes a tool for expanding individual capabilities or a force that replaces the majority of society." However, he did not mention any specific products or applications that are being developed in this video.
Zuckerberg established the research lab with the intention of skipping the artificial general intelligence (AGI) stage and moving directly into the era of superintelligent AI, after the open-source large language model (LLM) "Llama 4," released in April, was evaluated as underperforming. Meta plans to invest $65 billion (approximately 90 trillion KRW) annually and leverage large-scale infrastructure, including NVIDIA GPUs, to integrate superintelligent technology into AR glasses, wearables, and messaging platforms.
In an interview with The Information on July 15, he said, "Superintelligence could take 2 years, 5 years, or even 7 years. But we need to think and bet as if we will be ready within 2 to 3 years," and added, "We can make large-scale infrastructure investments with capital generated from our existing businesses."
