Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance and Samsung Medical Center Hold 1st Symposium of the Quality of Life Research Institute for Cancer Patients

Discussion on Collaboration Between Specialized Institutions to Improve Quality of Life After Treatment

Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance announced on July 31 that it held the "1st Symposium of the Quality of Life Research Institute for Cancer Patients" together with Samsung Medical Center at the Samsung Medical Center Cancer Hospital on July 30.

This event was organized to share the operational achievements of the "Quality of Life Research Institute for Cancer Patients," which was jointly established by the two institutions last year, and to expand related discussions with external experts.

The symposium, held under the theme "Integrated Strategies for the Daily Recovery of Cancer Patients: Focusing on Medical and Social Linkages," was attended by key figures from various fields, including the National Cancer Center, the medical community, and the insurance industry. They shared integrated approaches for supporting cancer patients in returning to daily life.

As the cancer patient survival rate has surpassed 70%, interest in life after treatment is increasing. Accordingly, the symposium discussed practical measures to improve the quality of life for cancer patients.

The detailed sessions covered a range of topics, including the importance of quality of life for cancer patients, identification and intervention of unmet needs based on evidence, and the roles of financial support and insurance for cancer patients.

In June last year, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance and Samsung Medical Center jointly established the "Quality of Life Research Institute for Cancer Patients" to understand the suffering of cancer patients who are relatively marginalized in terms of social attention and to support their return to daily life. The institute researches the physical, psychological, and economic difficulties faced by cancer patients and is developing practical measures to effectively improve their quality of life.

Lee Munhwa, CEO of Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, stated, "Many cancer patients experience numerous hidden difficulties such as emotional isolation, financial burden, and social disconnection," and added, "We plan to build an integrated healthcare ecosystem that supports not only the treatment journey of our customers but also their lives after treatment through ongoing cooperation with various social institutions."

Park Seungwoo, President of Samsung Medical Center, said, "This symposium is meaningful as it marks the first opportunity to share the achievements of the institute over the past year with various organizations," and continued, "I hope that the 'Quality of Life Research Institute for Cancer Patients' will serve as a hub, enabling close cooperation among experts in policy, insurance, and the medical field to bring about real change."
