Is the Era of AI Tutors Beginning? OpenAI Introduces ChatGPT 'Study Mode'

OpenAI Introduces "Study Mode" in ChatGPT
Aims to Support Deep Understanding in Tutoring and Beyond

OpenAI announced on July 29 (local time) that it has introduced a new "Study Mode" feature in ChatGPT to support student learning.

Starting today, subscribers to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team, as well as free users, can access this feature after logging in. The feature will also be available within a few weeks on "ChatGPT Edu," the AI platform officially used by educational institutions such as universities.

OpenAI explained that "Study Mode" not only provides answers but also offers a new experience by helping users work through problems step by step for deeper understanding. OpenAI stated, "ChatGPT has become one of the most widely used learning tools worldwide," and added, "Students turn to ChatGPT when tackling difficult homework, preparing for exams, or exploring new concepts." The company continued, "However, important questions have been raised in educational settings, such as whether AI truly assists with learning or simply provides answers without supporting the learner's understanding." OpenAI said it developed "Study Mode" to address these issues.

According to OpenAI, by using "Study Mode," students can build in-depth understanding through questions and guidance tailored to their goals and skill levels. This approach encourages students to engage in interesting and active thinking during the learning process itself, rather than simply completing assignments. Lia Belsky, Vice President of Education at OpenAI, said, "Utilizing ChatGPT in classes or tutoring can significantly improve academic performance." However, she also cautioned, "If it is used merely as a machine that provides correct answers, it can hinder learning."

Developed together with teachers, scientists, and educational experts, "Study Mode" expands students' thinking through interaction with AI until they reach the correct answer. It breaks down complex topics into step-by-step information for easier understanding. In addition, it adjusts learning according to the user's level based on previous conversation history, checks learning progress through quizzes and open-ended questions, and strengthens application skills through feedback.

OpenAI noted that one in three American college students already uses AI tools, and "Study Mode" was designed with university students in mind. However, the company also mentioned that, until the learning model is fully optimized, there may be occasional inconsistencies or errors.

In the future, OpenAI plans to research and develop features such as providing visual materials for complex or lengthy concepts, setting goals and tracking progress, and personalizing learning to suit the characteristics of individual students.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, recently appeared on a podcast and said, "Education will be dramatically transformed by AI in 18 years." Altman, who dropped out of Stanford University, added that his young son "will probably not go to college" and said, "My child will not be able to become smarter than AI."

He further stated, "When new technologies like AI emerge, people who grow up with them figure out what to do and take on new kinds of jobs. Therefore, I am more concerned about parents than children, because they will have to learn to work in a completely different way at the age of 50."
