Severe Burns and Skin Necrosis After Sitting on Hot Stone in Heat Wave: Even Brief Contact Can Be Fatal

A Woman in Her Seventies in Hubei Province Suffers Skin Necrosis from Burns
Temperature Reached 38 Degrees... Even Seconds of Contact Can Be Fatal

An incident occurred in China where a woman in her seventies suffered burns after briefly sitting on a stone to rest. China is also struggling with record-breaking abnormal heat, with temperatures reaching new highs day after day.

According to the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post (SCMP), on July 7 (local time), a 72-year-old woman identified as A, who lives in Xiangyang, Hubei Province, central China, suffered severe burns after sitting on a stone for 10 seconds, which required her to undergo skin graft surgery.

At the time, A was working in her vegetable garden and sat on a stone placed in the yard to take a short break. On that day, the temperature soared to 38 degrees Celsius. A felt a burning sensation as soon as she sat down, but because her legs hurt, she was unable to get up quickly. Hearing her screams, a neighbor rushed over and helped her stand up from the stone.

Although the incident lasted only about 10 seconds, A suffered severe burns on her buttocks along with intense pain. Her family took her to the hospital the following day.

Upon examination, medical staff diagnosed A with third-degree burns. The medical team explained, "Third-degree burns mean that the entire skin layer is necrotic, and recovery is impossible with medication alone." They added, "After surgery to remove the necrotic tissue, a skin graft is necessary."

Fortunately, it was reported that A regained stability after the surgery. Medical staff warned that if the surface temperature of metal or concrete exceeds 50 degrees Celsius, even one minute of contact can cause blisters, and if it surpasses 60 degrees, second-degree burns can occur within a minute. At temperatures above 70 degrees, even a few seconds of contact can result in severe burns.

Meanwhile, China is suffering from a record-breaking heat wave this summer, with temperatures fluctuating between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius. On July 11, an incident occurred in Henan Province where an asphalt road, overheated by solar radiation, expanded and exploded. At the time of the accident, the temperature in the area exceeded 40 degrees, and the road surface temperature reportedly soared to 68 degrees Celsius in an instant.
