The incident occurred at around 6:30 p.m. local time on July 28 at 345 Park Avenue, a high-rise building in Manhattan, when a man fired a gun indiscriminately. Tamura broke into the high-rise building and opened fire in the lobby and on the 33rd-floor office. Four civilians were killed and one person was seriously injured. The suspect took his own life.

This building is known to house major financial institutions and key facilities, including Blackstone, the world's largest private equity firm, as well as KPMG, Deutsche Bank, the headquarters of the National Football League (NFL), and the Consulate General of Ireland in New York.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) explained that Tamura drove from Las Vegas on July 26 and arrived in New York that afternoon. At around 6:30 p.m., he retrieved an M4 assault rifle from his vehicle, crossed the plaza, and headed toward the building.

He first shot and killed a New York police officer who was on security duty, then killed another woman and man while heading toward the elevator, and fired indiscriminately in the lobby. He also shot and seriously injured a security guard who was hiding behind a desk along the way. However, after allowing a woman who exited the elevator to pass unharmed, he took the elevator to the 33rd-floor office of Rudin Management and killed another woman.

The media released a surveillance camera photo showing the suspect walking into the building carrying a rifle. In the photo, Tamura is seen wearing a dark jacket and shirt, sunglasses, and holding a rifle in his right hand.

Police stated that Tamura had a history of mental illness, but the exact motive has not been determined.

CNN, citing sources, reported, "Based on documents found on the shooter's body, it is presumed that he was dissatisfied with the NFL's handling of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). The shooter was reportedly a talented football player in his youth."

Numerous videos have been posted on various social media platforms showing citizens fleeing the building or moving around the building with their hands raised under police guidance. Kyle Marshall, who works at Morgan Stanley in the nearby Park Building, reported that police restricted movement until 8 p.m.

New York Mayor Eric Adams, after being briefed on the incident, warned New Yorkers to avoid visiting the area where the incident occurred.

Meanwhile, CTE is a disease similar to Alzheimer's and is most commonly found among American football players. According to research cited by CNN, CTE can occur when the head is repeatedly impacted, even without concussions.
