Trump Emphasizes "Ironclad Alliance" with South Korea
Pledges Continued Commitment to Korean Peninsula Security
On the anniversary of the Korean War Armistice, U.S. President Donald Trump emphasized the ironclad U.S.-South Korea alliance and stated that he is committed to the protection of the Korean Peninsula.
On July 28, the day after the 72nd anniversary of the Armistice, President Trump issued a presidential message, saying, "In accordance with the foreign policy of 'peace through strength,' we remain firmly committed to cooperating for the protection of the Korean Peninsula."
President Trump also stressed, "The evil of communism still exists in Asia, but the armed forces of the United States and South Korea remain united under an ironclad alliance to this day."
President Trump stated, "Even more than 70 years after the signing of the armistice, the border dividing North and South Korea still remains," and added, "I am proud that during my first term, I became the first U.S. president to cross the DMZ into North Korea."
He went on to explain that his first administration maintained a policy of maximum pressure and imposed sanctions on North Korea in order to negotiate denuclearization, the release of American hostages, and the repatriation of the remains of U.S. soldiers.
During his first term, on July 27, 2017, President Trump proclaimed the 'National Korean War Armistice Day' to commemorate the 64th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice, and he issued a proclamation every year until the end of his presidency in 2020.
