Standard Energy, led by CEO Kim Booki, which developed the world’s first vanadium ion battery (VIB), announced on July 29 that it will begin a demonstration project to optimize power usage efficiency in urban railway stations using VIBs in collaboration with Daejeon Transportation Corporation.
In connection with this, Standard Energy held a completion ceremony on July 28 at Guam Station on Daejeon Metro Line 1 in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, attended by Yeon Gyuwang, President of Daejeon Transportation Corporation, Kim Booki, CEO of Standard Energy, and other related officials.
Through this demonstration project, Standard Energy and Daejeon Transportation Corporation plan to improve power usage efficiency by using a VIB energy storage system (ESS) to charge electricity during off-peak hours when rates are low, and then discharge it during daytime peak load hours.
The Guam Station VIB ESS demonstration project is the result of concretizing the "Business Agreement for the Introduction and Demonstration of Vanadium Ion Battery Energy Storage System Technology in the Urban Railway Sector," which was signed between Daejeon Transportation Corporation and Standard Energy in June of last year.
In this agreement, the two companies agreed not only to cooperate on direct energy savings that benefit urban railway operations, such as storing and utilizing regenerative energy from trains, but also to jointly develop various charging systems by integrating urban railway infrastructure with VIB ESS.
For this demonstration project, Daejeon Transportation Corporation will designate the target station and provide the relevant site, while Standard Energy will be responsible for the installation and operation of the VIB ESS. This project is being carried out as part of the "Public Demand-Based Problem-Solving Demonstration Support Project" led by Daejeon Metropolitan City and Daejeon Technopark.
