KakaoBank Partners with UNICEF for Social Contribution, Donates 2.6 Billion KRW

Support for Youth in Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, and More

KakaoBank announced that it has signed a 'Global Partnership for Climate Crisis Response for Future Generations' business agreement with UNICEF.

This agreement involves a three-party collaboration between UNICEF headquarters, UNICEF Korea Committee, and KakaoBank. Over the next two years, a total of $2 million (approximately 2.6 billion KRW) will be donated to support youth in Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, and other countries. KakaoBank will contribute $1 million annually to operate global social contribution programs.

The signing ceremony was held on July 28 at the UNICEF Korea Committee office in Mapo, Seoul. The event was attended by KakaoBank CEO Yoon Ho-young, UNICEF Asia-Pacific Hub Lead Kanetaka Sawako, and UNICEF Korea Committee Secretary-General Cho Mijin.

The donations will be used for climate crisis response projects in countries such as Indonesia, Cambodia, and Thailand. In Indonesia, smart schools will be established with enhanced on-campus water and sanitation services. In Cambodia, school facilities will be built to respond to extreme heat. In Thailand, capacity-building education and the 'Climate Action Conference' will be organized to enable children and youth to respond to the climate crisis and participate in government policy-making.

In November this year, the UNICEF Korea Committee and KakaoBank will also co-host the eco-friendly donation marathon 'Save Race 2025'. The participation fees for this marathon will be used to support children affected by the climate crisis.

Last year, KakaoBank also collaborated with UNICEF to donate $1 million to five countries, including Myanmar and Laos. In Cambodia, solar power infrastructure was established in schools and medical facilities without electricity. In Laos, electricity produced using eco-friendly methods was supplied to school water and sanitation facilities. In Malaysia and Thailand, climate crisis response education was provided to youth.

CEO Yoon stated, "KakaoBank is the only domestic company to have operated multi-year programs with UNICEF as a social contribution partner in the field of climate crisis," adding, "We will continue to expand our social contribution activities to areas in need, regardless of country or environment."
