On July 29, the Gwangju City government announced that it will conduct safety inspections at 36 water recreation facilities frequently used by citizens until the end of August, in order to prevent safety accidents ahead of the peak summer vacation season.

The inspection will cover a total of 36 sites, including 2 inland water bodies such as rivers, 3 temporary water play facilities, and 31 water play facilities for children. These facilities are popular places in the region where residents can easily and conveniently enjoy water activities during the summer.

The city and local districts plan to conduct joint inspections together with private experts and facility management representatives. By working with private experts who possess specialized knowledge, the city aims to identify and eliminate risk factors in advance, thereby ensuring thorough prevention of safety accidents.

The main inspection items include: checking the working status of safety personnel and whether they possess safety equipment; assessing the appropriateness of the locations of safety facilities such as guide signs; and confirming whether outdated or damaged safety equipment is present.

In response to the continued increase in urban water recreation facilities due to the heatwave, the city will also inspect the appropriateness of deploying safety personnel (in teams of two) and the procedures for responding to emergencies in the event of an accident.

As a result of the safety inspections, simple or minor issues will be addressed immediately on site. For issues that are difficult to resolve immediately, the facility management will be required to carry out repairs or reinforcement, and the use of the facility will be restricted until all risk factors are eliminated. This approach will ensure ongoing safety management.

Kim Junyoung, Director of Citizen Safety, stated, "With the ongoing heatwave, we expect more citizens to use water recreation facilities. We hope everyone will pay close attention to water safety when enjoying outdoor activities at valleys and rivers, and have a more enjoyable and safe leisure time."
