Samsung to Produce Tesla's Next-Generation AI6 Chips
Musk: "Strategic Importance of Samsung's US Plant"
Samsung Electronics' foundry (semiconductor contract manufacturing) division has secured a massive contract worth 22 trillion won from a global big tech company, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has personally revealed that he is the customer.
On July 28, CEO Musk announced on his X account (formerly Twitter), "Samsung Electronics' new Texas plant will be dedicated to producing Tesla's next-generation AI6 chips," adding, "The strategic importance of this plant cannot be overstated." Earlier that morning, Samsung Electronics disclosed that it had signed a semiconductor contract manufacturing supply agreement worth 22.7647 trillion won. The contract period runs from July 24 of this year to December 31, 2033, making it a long-term contract of eight years and five months.
Until now, production of Tesla's autonomous driving chips has been handled almost exclusively by Taiwan's foundry TSMC. CEO Musk explained that Samsung Electronics is currently developing the AI4 chip, while TSMC has completed the design of the AI5 and has started production in Taiwan, with plans to manufacture it at its Arizona plant in the United States in the future. Afterward, the next-generation AI6 chip will be produced by Samsung Electronics.
In another post, CEO Musk stated, "Samsung Electronics has allowed Tesla to maximize manufacturing efficiency, which is extremely important," and added, "I will visit the site myself to accelerate the progress."
