As factors that threaten health are increasing due to recent weather changes such as heat waves and heavy rainfall, the importance of following preventive measures against waterborne and foodborne infectious diseases, as well as heat-related illnesses, is being emphasized when using cooling shelters.
According to the Sejong City Public Health Center on July 28, waterborne and foodborne infectious diseases are illnesses that cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain due to the consumption of water or food contaminated by bacteria or viruses. To prevent these diseases, it is necessary to: ▲ practice proper handwashing regularly ▲ thoroughly cook food before eating ▲ boil water before drinking ▲ wash vegetables and fruits with clean water ▲ refrain from preparing or cooking food if experiencing diarrhea.
In particular, heat-related illnesses are acute conditions that occur when exposed to high temperatures for extended periods. Symptoms include headache, muscle cramps, and decreased consciousness, and in severe cases, they can be life-threatening. To prevent such illnesses, it is important to: ▲ block direct sunlight when going outside (by using a parasol or wearing a hat) ▲ drink water frequently ▲ take breaks during the hottest hours of the day.
If a heat-related illness occurs, if the person is conscious, move them to a cool place, loosen their clothing, and provide fluids. If the person is unconscious, immediately contact emergency services at 119 and transport them to a hospital.
A representative from the public health center stated, "We plan to distribute promotional materials through each town and neighborhood administrative welfare center so that preventive measures can be effectively communicated to citizens using cooling shelters," and added, "As this is a period vulnerable to heat waves and infectious diseases, we will do our best to continue promoting and carrying out preventive activities so that citizens can remember and practice these measures for a healthy summer."
