The city of Daejeon is seeing positive results from its "Marriage Incentive Support Program for Young Couples," which provides 2.5 million won per person to young couples, with a satisfaction rate of 96%.

This program helps motivate young people to marry and supports them in establishing a stable foundation for their lives. The main uses of the incentive were: ▲ purchasing home appliances and furniture (26.4%), ▲ preparing for childbirth and childcare (25.5%), ▲ wedding expenses (22%), and ▲ securing housing (14.4%).

As shown in the analysis of spending, the incentive appears to have helped reduce the financial burden during the early stages of marriage.

The marriage incentive is provided to young people between the ages of 18 and 39 who are getting married for the first time, have their resident registration in Daejeon, and have continuously lived in the city for at least six months including the date of marriage registration. Each eligible individual receives 2.5 million won. Applications must be made within one year of the marriage registration date.

Launched in October 2024, the program had benefited a cumulative total of 14,717 people as of the end of June this year. In response to the increase in marriages, the city has secured an additional 10 billion won in funding to continue the program.

To mark six months since the program's implementation, the city conducted a survey of 1,016 recipients from June 9 to June 19. The results showed that 96.0% of respondents (60.1% "very helpful," 35.8% "somewhat helpful") said the program had provided practical assistance in their lives after marriage.

Suggestions for improvement included increasing the support amount (38.8%), expanding the eligible age range (21.1%), introducing a mandatory residency period (15.5%), and including remarried couples (9.2%).

Koh Hyunduk, Director of the Education Policy and Strategy Bureau of Daejeon, stated, "Last year, about 10,400 people received the incentive. As of May this year, the marriage rate has increased by 26% compared to the previous year, and we expect around 13,000 recipients by the end of the year." He added, "Given the high level of public satisfaction, we will use the results of this survey to improve the system and actively encourage young people to marry and settle in the region."
