The Presidential Office has refuted claims that allowing new media outlets to join the press corps means “YouTubers are being granted access,” stating that this is not true. It also clarified that conservative-leaning media outlets are eligible to apply.
On July 25, Lee Guyoun, Senior Secretary for Public Relations at the Presidential Office, announced to the press, “Reporters granted access to the Presidential Office are evaluated based on objective criteria such as the media organization’s reporting capabilities and track record, not on political orientation. All outlets that have been approved are officially registered media organizations with established reporting teams and proper news systems. The claim that ‘YouTubers are being allowed access,’ as raised by some, is completely untrue.”
The previous day, the Presidential Office granted access to three outlets: Kim Eo-jun’s News Factory, Gobalnews, and Chwijepyeonuijeom. They were also invited to the group chat room where schedules and messages are shared among the press corps.
Lee added, “Since the current administration took office, regulations regarding access to the Presidential Office have been thoroughly reviewed and improved through multiple rounds of discussion with the existing press corps and external experts. If an outlet demonstrates reporting capability, a track record, and serves the public interest, conservative-leaning media can also apply under the same standards.” He further stated, “If any ridicule or slander against other reporters occurs, such actions will be dealt with strictly.”
