Jeonnam Provincial Chapter of the Democratic Party Files Emergency Disciplinary Request on July 24
The Democratic Party of Korea has initiated disciplinary procedures against its city council members who have recently caused public controversy due to inappropriate remarks and behavior.
According to the Jeonnam Provincial Chapter of the Democratic Party on July 25, the provincial chapter filed an emergency disciplinary request with the central party on July 24 for a total of three individuals: one Mokpo City Council member and two Yeosu City Council members.
In the case of an emergency disciplinary request, the Supreme Council determines the level of disciplinary action at its discretion, which may include expulsion, suspension of party membership, suspension of party position, or a warning.
While severe flood damage is ongoing nationwide, on July 23 in the afternoon, Yeosu City Council members A and B raised their voices over past standing committee issues at a restaurant in Yeosu and eventually engaged in a physical altercation, causing controversy.
On July 22, Mokpo City Council member C caused controversy by making harsh remarks to Mokpo Acting Mayor Cho Seokhoon over the phone during a marine waste collection event at Pyeonghwa Square in Mokpo, saying, "What are you doing in this hot weather? Will you take responsibility if an accident occurs?"
Ju Cheolhyeon, head of the Jeonnam Provincial Chapter of the Democratic Party, stated, "President Lee Jaemyung and the party leadership have emphasized the importance of establishing discipline among public officials, so we deeply regret that such incidents have occurred."
