On this day, Vice Minister Lee made these remarks during his opening statement at the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters meeting on collective action by doctors, held at the Seoul Government Complex in the morning. This is his first meeting presiding as the Chief General Coordinator of the headquarters since being appointed as the Second Vice Minister of Health and Welfare on June 30.
At the meeting, Vice Minister Lee assessed that, although the conflict between the government and the medical community that began in February last year has continued for one year and five months, there have recently been signs of communication and cooperation between the government and the medical sector.
Vice Minister Lee said, "With Minister Chung Eun-kyung's inauguration, we are making efforts to build cooperation based on trust. Since taking office, I have also met with various healthcare organizations to listen to their opinions on current issues. The medical community has also expressed that an environment is being created where, based on trust in the new government's communication efforts, we can engage in dialogue and work toward resolving issues."
He continued, "Based on this communication and cooperation, the Resident Training Council is being held today. We will use this as an opportunity to resolve conflicts between the government and the medical community, and we will strive to establish measures to normalize the healthcare system that meet the expectations of the public."
He also made it clear that the government is committed to creating a 'people-centered healthcare system' through medical reform. Vice Minister Lee stated, "Through communication and cooperation with the medical community, we will revitalize regional and essential healthcare, expand public healthcare, and build a future-oriented and sustainable healthcare system. We promise to pursue medical reform measures that both the public and the medical community can agree upon, moving beyond conflict."
Regarding the emergency medical system, he explained that most indicators, such as the number of emergency room visits and the volume of medical services, are currently being maintained at relatively stable levels. Vice Minister Lee said, "We will strengthen communication with patient organizations to deeply listen to the voices of patients who have endured long-standing confusion and inconvenience in the medical field, and we will strive to guarantee the public's right to health and safety."
