On July 24, EMK Musical Company announced that it will release six of its representative works, including "Elisabeth," on Disney+ next month.
The six productions to be released are "Elisabeth," "Phantom," "Monte Cristo," "The Man Who Laughs," "Excalibur," and "Marie Antoinette." These are EMK's signature musicals that have received great love from countless audiences. They were previously screened in cinemas, allowing audiences to experience them through filmed performances.
The first to be released, "Elisabeth: The Musical Live" and "Phantom: The Musical Live," will be available on August 6, 2025. The musical "Elisabeth" depicts the anguish over death, love, and life experienced by Empress Elisabeth von Wittelsbach of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Since its premiere in 1992, it has been performed in more than 14 countries and in 10 different languages, attracting an audience of 12 million people, including in South Korea.
"Elisabeth: The Musical Live" was released in theaters last year and gained great popularity. This work is a filmed version of the 10th anniversary performance of the musical "Elisabeth." It was the first live musical film in the world to introduce Dolby Atmos, delivering a vivid and immersive sense of presence and receiving high praise. The cast includes Ock Joo-hyun, Lee Haejun, Lee Jihoon, Gil Byungmin, Joo Ah, and Jang Yunseok.
Also being released, "Phantom: The Musical Live" is a filmed performance of the musical "Phantom," which is based on Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel "The Phantom of the Opera." It was released in theaters in 2021. The cast includes Kyuhyun, Lim Sunhae, Yoon Youngseok, Shin Youngsook, Enoch, Kim Juwon, Yoon Jeonil, and Lim Gihong.
On August 13, "Monte Cristo: The Musical Live" and "The Man Who Laughs" will be released. "Monte Cristo" is based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas and is a live performance film of the 2020 production, shot with 14 8K cinematic cameras to achieve the first-ever on-stage close-up filming. The cast includes Kai, Lina, and Kim Junhyun.
"The Man Who Laughs" is based on the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo. It was filmed in 2019 and released in 17 theaters nationwide, receiving an enthusiastic response from audiences. The cast includes Park Kanghyun, Yang Junmo, Min Kyunga, and Shin Youngsook.
Finally, the musicals "Excalibur" and "Marie Antoinette" will be released on August 20. "Excalibur" is a reinterpretation of the legend of King Arthur set in ancient Britain, depicting the coming-of-age story of the protagonist destined to be king on a grand scale. The cast includes Kai, Park Kanghyun, Kim Sohyang, and Shin Youngsook.
"Marie Antoinette" focuses on the dramatic life of Marie Antoinette, who was Queen of France but met her end at the guillotine during the 18th-century French Revolution. The work also contrasts her life with that of the fictional character Marguerite Arnaud, who leads the revolution out of concern for social injustice, exploring the true meaning of truth and justice in depth. The cast includes Kim Sohyang, Jung Yuji, Doyoung, and Kim Junhyun, delivering a profound portrayal of human dignity and the tragedies of the era.
