"Kicking, Drunken Behavior, Firing for Not Graduating from S University"... Junpyo Hong Reveals Lawmakers' Power Harassment Cases

"Lawmakers with Bad Character Must Now Be Dealt With"

As Sunwoo Kang, a lawmaker from the Democratic Party of Korea, voluntarily resigned from her nomination as Minister of Gender Equality and Family amid allegations of power harassment, former Daegu Mayor Junpyo Hong raised his voice, stating, "Lawmakers with bad character must now be dealt with."

On July 24, through his Facebook page, former Mayor Hong said, "Is Sunwoo Kang the only lawmaker in Yeouido politics who abuses aides and engages in power harassment?"

Former Mayor Hong mentioned past cases of lawmakers' power harassment. He said, "Was there not a lawmaker who, without any reason, kicked and assaulted a party staff member, left the party after a collective protest from the staff, and then quietly rejoined once things settled down?" targeting Eonseok Song, the acting leader and floor leader of the People Power Party. Song caused controversy in April 2021 during the 4·7 by-elections by verbally abusing and kicking a party staff member. He then left the People Power Party and later rejoined.

Former Mayor Hong also said, "Was there not a lawmaker who fired an aide for no reason other than not graduating from S University? Was there not a female lawmaker who, while drunk, harassed and behaved badly toward her aide?"

He further stated, "Although everyone tries to keep it quiet, power harassment against aides has already become a custom in Yeouido politics," adding, "It is late, but it is fortunate that this custom is finally becoming a subject of controversy."
