Ordinance Enacted... Priority Support for Low-Income Households
Lee: "Realizing Transportation Welfare for All Citizens"
Starting next year, Ansan City in Gyeonggi Province will provide transportation subsidies for children and adolescents.
On July 23, Ansan City announced that it had enacted and promulgated the "Ordinance on Transportation Subsidies for Children and Adolescents" on July 16, which provides the legal basis for supporting transportation costs for children and adolescents aged 6 to 18.
With this ordinance, the city has established a legal foundation to institutionally guarantee the right to mobility for children and adolescents aged 6 to 18 who are registered residents of the city, enabling support for public transportation expenses.
The newly established ordinance includes provisions on: ▲ eligibility for support (children and adolescents aged 6 to 18); ▲ scope of support (partial or full transportation costs within the budget); ▲ establishment of a support system; ▲ methods and procedures for support; and ▲ post-management measures.
The city expects that the enactment of this ordinance will help reduce the financial burden on students, promote carbon neutrality, and create a sustainable transportation environment within the region.
The transportation subsidy will first be provided to low-income households. However, the city plans to expand eligibility to all children and adolescents by establishing the necessary institutional foundation and securing budgetary resources. The transportation subsidy is expected to be implemented around January next year after signing a business agreement with transportation card settlement operators and building the necessary system.
Lee Minguen, Mayor of Ansan, stated, "The enactment of this ordinance marks the starting point for creating an environment where children and adolescents can move about safely," and added, "We will continue our efforts to make Ansan a city of transportation welfare where all citizens can enjoy these benefits."
