Focusing Party Efforts on Passing the Agricultural and Fisheries Disaster Countermeasures Act and Related Legislation
Byungki Kim, Acting Party Leader and Floor Leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, stated on the 22nd, "The Democratic Party will work with the government to swiftly declare special disaster zones and provide special disaster relief funds."
At the floor strategy meeting held at the National Assembly that day, Kim said, "President Jaemyung Lee has ordered the prompt declaration of special disaster zones in areas affected by heavy rain," and made the above remarks.
He continued, "The National Assembly will also act swiftly," and added, "We will expedite legislation to support disaster prevention and rapid recovery. We will focus our party's efforts on passing the Agricultural and Fisheries Disaster Countermeasures Act and the Agricultural and Fisheries Disaster Insurance Act in the National Assembly, which were previously rejected by the Yoon Sukyeol administration."
Kim also explained that the Democratic Party's central office will monitor the recovery situation nationwide and provide on-site assistance where needed.
Addressing the People Power Party, he urged, "Now is the time for both the ruling and opposition parties to unite in overcoming the disaster," and stressed, "There must never be any attempt to turn disasters into political strife."
Heoyoung Huh, Senior Deputy Floor Leader for Policy, also noted that out of the 103 disaster-related bills currently pending in the National Assembly, 36 are related to heavy rain and flood damage, and emphasized, "We will prioritize handling the most urgent flood-related bills."
Among the key bills related to flood damage, priority will be given to the amendment to the River Act, which would allow the state to directly manage river maintenance; the amendment to the Small River Maintenance Act, which aims to systematize the maintenance of small rivers; and the amendment to the Building Act, which would mandate the installation of waterproofing facilities in underground structures located in areas prone to frequent flooding.
