Assault on County Governor During Heavy Rain Damage Inspection
Council: "Erosion of Administrative Trust, Urgent Need for Institutional Safeguards"
On July 21, the Buyeo County Council in South Chungcheong Province expressed strong regret and firmly condemned the assault on County Governor Park Junghyun, stating, "Violence against public officials is a serious criminal act that can never be justified under any circumstances."
Governor Park was verbally abused and assaulted by a resident in his 60s, identified as Mr. A, on July 17 while visiting the Gyuram-myeon area to inspect damage caused by heavy rainfall.
It was reported that Mr. A's fist grazed Governor Park's cheek, and that Mr. A continued to hurl insults and abusive language afterward.
The county council defined such actions as "serious crimes that undermine public order," and emphasized that violence threatening the legitimate duties of public officials can never be tolerated.
Chairman Kim Youngchun stated, "Violence against public officials who are dedicated to protecting the lives and property of county residents is a problem that our entire society must work together to prevent," adding, "This incident is not a simple clash, but a grave matter that shakes trust in the entire administration."
He further emphasized, "Institutional improvements are urgently needed to prevent such incidents from recurring," and called for practical measures to ensure the protection of public officials and the safety of their duties.
Meanwhile, the county council announced that, in light of this incident, it will do its utmost to restore trust in administration and promote community unity through responsible legislative activities in partnership with county residents.
