Hongseong County: "Neglecting Flooded Crops Leads to Secondary Damage"

Concerns Over Spread of Pests and Diseases in Peppers and Strawberry Seedlings
Prompt Drainage, Removal of Diseased Leaves, and Foliar Fertilization Recommended as Post-Management Measures

Hongseong County: "Neglecting Flooded Crops Leads to Secondary Damage" Hongseong County Agricultural Technology Center

Hongseong County, South Chungcheong Province, announced on the 21st that it has urgently provided post-management guidelines for each crop to prevent secondary damage to major crops such as peppers and strawberry seedlings for farms affected by recent heavy rains and flooding.

According to the county, open-field vegetables such as peppers are highly sensitive to waterlogging, making prompt drainage and soil management essential after flooding.

In particular, it is important to quickly drain water from furrows, remove soil from leaves, and stimulate root activity by raking the topsoil or earthing up, as these measures help crops recover their growth.

Additionally, since pests and diseases can spread rapidly after the rain stops, it is necessary to remove diseased leaves and fruits and to promptly control outbreaks using registered pesticides.

For crops with pale leaves and reduced vigor, foliar application of urea or type 4 compound fertilizer is also recommended.

For strawberry seedlings, flooding during the monsoon season can hinder rooting and cause seedlings to rot, requiring special care. Diseased seedlings should be removed immediately, and it is essential to check the drainage of seedbeds and trays and to improve ventilation to address the hot and humid environment.

Furthermore, as there is concern about the occurrence of major diseases such as anthracnose, wilt, and blight, preventive pesticide application from the early stages is necessary. In flooded conditions, foliar fertilization should be carried out first, followed by drench application after drying to enhance control effectiveness.

Lee Seungbok, head of the County Agricultural Technology Center, stated, "Prompt response immediately after flooding is key to minimizing damage for farmers," adding, "We will further strengthen on-site technical guidance and monitoring activities."
