Large-scale Damage Caused by Torrential Rains
from July 17 to 19
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, during this period of heavy rainfall, Sancheong County recorded an average precipitation of 607mm, with Sicheon-myeon reaching the highest level at 759mm.
Sancheong County in South Gyeongsang Province suffered extensive damage due to the torrential rains that lasted for three days from July 17 to 19, mobilizing a total of 660 personnel and equipment for recovery efforts.
As a result of the heavy rainfall, 2,103 people from 1,602 households across Sancheong County were evacuated, with 1,607 people from 1,254 households being urgently relocated on July 19 alone.
The majority of victims were from Sancheong-eup, Danseong-myeon, and Sinan-myeon, with a significant portion being elderly residents in their seventies. Public facility damage included 45 cases involving roads, rivers, and water management infrastructure, amounting to a total of 45.2 billion KRW.
Private property damage reached 10 billion KRW, including 231 hectares of farmland and 89 hectares of horticultural facilities. As of the morning of July 20, Sancheong County had completed emergency repairs for 29 out of 45 public facility cases, accounting for 64%. A total of 660 personnel and 55 pieces of equipment, including excavators, were deployed.
For temporary evacuees, 716 relief kits and 680 daily necessities were distributed, and emergency support continued with both the Red Cross and the Salvation Army providing 300 meals each.
Meanwhile, Sancheong County repeatedly provided residents with safety instructions through 326 village broadcasts, 90 disaster alert text messages, and electronic billboards, and proactively controlled access to 39 Saeweolgyo bridges and major roads.
