Gyeryong City in South Chungcheong Province has taken steps to protect the health of sanitation workers in response to the ongoing heat wave.

On July 21, the city announced that it would adjust the working hours of sanitation workers to prevent heat-related illnesses in advance and to create a safe working environment for its employees.

This measure aims to minimize the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke, which may occur due to the forecasted extreme heat. It also seeks to complete waste collection earlier in the day, thereby providing citizens with a cleaner and more pleasant urban environment.

Accordingly, until September 30, Gyeryong City’s sanitation workers will begin their shifts at 7:00 a.m., one hour earlier than the previous start time of 8:00 a.m.

The city plans to actively promote these changes through both online and offline channels to ensure that citizens are well informed and avoid any confusion.

Mayor Lee Eungwoo stated, "Thanks to the dedication of our sanitation workers, our city is always maintained as a clean and beautiful place," adding, "We will continue to improve communication and working conditions to ensure the safety of field workers during the heat wave."

Meanwhile, the city is also striving to improve on-site working conditions by providing safety equipment to sanitation workers and regularly listening to their suggestions and feedback.

This adjustment of working hours is also an administrative measure reflecting the voices from the field by Mayor Lee Eungwoo, and is expected to play a significant role in ensuring that both citizens and workers can have a safe summer together.
