Mayor Jo Gyuil of Jinju Visits Disaster Sites for Swift Recovery and Secondary Damage Prevention Measures

for Swift Recovery and Prevention of Further Damage

Jinju City in South Gyeongsang Province has experienced damage in its jurisdiction due to the heavy rainfall that began on July 17. In response, city officials visited the affected sites to conduct urgent situation assessments and initiated measures for swift recovery and the prevention of secondary damage.

Mayor Jo Gyuil began by inspecting the flood-affected area of Omicheon, the inundated Oeyul Village in Myeongseok-myeon, and the damaged road in the Namseong district. On July 19, he continued by visiting the flooded river area in Micheon-myeon, the urban flooding sites in Hadae-dong and Sangpyeong-dong, as well as the inundated farmland in Sugok-myeon to assess the extent of the damage.

Subsequently, he visited flood-damaged areas in Yangok Village in Naedong-myeon, as well as Myeongseok-myeon, Jinseong-myeon, and Daegok-myeon. There, he listened directly to residents’ concerns, encouraged on-site personnel, and instructed the relevant departments to carry out swift recovery and establish permanent countermeasures.

Mayor Jo Gyuil personally visited the damage site to conduct an urgent situation assessment.

This period of heavy rainfall recorded an average precipitation of over 360 mm. In particular, some areas such as Daepyeong-myeon (549 mm) and Micheon-myeon (543 mm) experienced torrential downpours exceeding 50 mm per hour. As of July 20, reported damages included three cases of river flooding, 135.6 hectares of farmland inundated, and 31 instances of road damage or flooding.

In addition, with road, river, and Saewolgyo bridge closures, approximately 600 residents from areas at risk of landslides, river flooding, and reservoir collapse were evacuated. The city is currently focusing its administrative resources on flood recovery efforts.

Mayor Jo Gyuil stated, "I deeply regret that citizens have suffered damage due to this unexpected heavy rainfall," and emphasized, "We will prioritize the safety and lives of our citizens, strengthen real-time monitoring, and conduct preemptive inspections of high-risk areas to prevent further damage."

He also added, "While accelerating the recovery process, we will thoroughly inspect and reinforce disaster prevention facilities to minimize damage in similar situations in the future."

Meanwhile, Jinju City has deployed senior administrative officials to the field to support rapid damage assessments and is proceeding with support procedures for flood-affected residents. In cooperation with the Volunteer Center and related organizations, the city is urgently deploying personnel and equipment to carry out on-site recovery activities.
