"If You Haven't Done Your Makeup Yet, Now's the Time," Jokes Chris Martin
After the personal details of a concertgoer in an extramarital relationship were revealed on a giant screen during a Coldplay concert, sparking ongoing controversy, Chris Martin, the band’s leader and vocalist, made an indirect reference to the incident during a performance.
According to CNN and other outlets on July 20 (local time), during a concert held the previous day at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin, Martin made a joke before the “Jumbotron Song”?a segment where he points the camera at the audience and improvises a song about them live.
He said, “I want to say hello to all of you,” and explained, “We’re going to put some of you on the big screen using our camera,” while strumming an acoustic guitar. He then added, “If you haven’t done your makeup yet, now’s the time,” prompting cheers and laughter from the audience.
CNN reported that Martin appeared to be making a lighthearted warning in response to a recent incident where a middle-aged man and woman attending a Coldplay concert were caught on the live broadcast screen, exposing their extramarital affair.
Coldplay has not made any direct comments about the incident in question.
On July 16, during a Coldplay concert in Boston, Massachusetts, footage of a middle-aged man and woman embracing while watching the show appeared on the giant screen. After noticing themselves on the display, they looked shocked, covered their faces, and quickly left their seats. At the time, Martin joked, “They’re either having an affair or are very shy.”
This video spread rapidly on social media platforms such as TikTok, becoming a global sensation. As rumors of an affair circulated, the identities of the two individuals were revealed. The man was Andy Byron, CEO of the American IT company Astronomer, and the woman was Christine Cabot, the company’s Chief People Officer (CPO).
Many people called for Byron’s dismissal, and he ultimately resigned on July 19, three days after the incident. According to CNBC and CNN, Astronomer released an official statement saying, “While this incident may have changed external perceptions of the company, our work and products for our customers remain unchanged. We will continue to focus on our core business.”
