According to multiple foreign media outlets, including the British newspaper The Sun, on July 14, footage was released online showing an employee at a Russian fast food chain drive-thru spitting on a hamburger patty.
The controversial video shows the employee glancing around while preparing a hamburger at the counter, then suddenly spitting on the patty and covering it with cheese. The hamburger was then packaged as usual and handed to the customer. The customer who filmed the incident stated, "After a verbal altercation with the employee, I decided to record the process because I felt uneasy. I never expected something like this to actually happen."
As the video spread, the fast food chain immediately issued an apology, stating, "The employee's actions were clearly inappropriate, and we have terminated their employment in accordance with internal regulations. We also sincerely apologize to the affected customer."
The dismissed employee told local media, "Before the incident, the customer shouted profanities and insulted me personally," expressing a sense of injustice.
The chain where this incident occurred is a local brand that was launched after acquiring McDonald's assets across Russia following McDonald's withdrawal from the country in 2022, when Russia invaded Ukraine.
