Ryu Youngsang of Chosun University Hospital: "Patients with Fatty Liver and Prediabetes Face Higher Mortality"

Research Paper Published Online in Cardiovascular Diabetology

Ryu Youngsang of Chosun University Hospital: "Patients with Fatty Liver and Prediabetes Face Higher Mortality" Ryu Youngsang, Professor of Endocrinology at Chosun University Hospital.

Chosun University Hospital announced on July 17 that a research paper co-authored by Ryu Youngsang, Professor of Endocrinology at Chosun University Hospital, as the first author, has been published online in the world-renowned journal Cardiovascular Diabetology (IF 10.6).

This study revealed that, among middle-aged adults in Korea, the presence of both prediabetes and fatty liver simultaneously increases not only the incidence of diabetes but also raises the risk of cardiovascular disease by approximately 30% and mortality by about 70%.

The study analyzed health examination data from the National Health Insurance Service, selecting 1,182,751 adults aged 40 to 65 between 2009 and 2012, and followed them for an average of 11.7 years. The research investigated newly developed diabetes, major cardiovascular events, and all-cause mortality.

The main findings showed that while either prediabetes or fatty liver alone increases risk, the coexistence of both conditions leads to an additional increase in risk.

The paper lists Choi Wonseok, postdoctoral researcher at UC Irvine and former clinical assistant professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Hwasun Chonnam National University Hospital, as the corresponding author. Kim Heekyung, professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Hwasun Chonnam National University Hospital, and Park Minae, researcher at Hanmi Pharmaceutical, participated as co-first authors.

Professor Ryu emphasized, "Not everyone with prediabetes will progress to diabetes, but when fatty liver is also present, these individuals should be considered a high-risk group not only for diabetes but also for cardiovascular disease. Integrated management strategies that simultaneously address both liver and blood glucose?through lifestyle modification or medication?are essential."
