On July 15, Lee Donghwan, mayor of Goyang Special City, held a roundtable meeting in the city hall's main conference room with about 30 elementary school operation committee members under the theme "Education Blooming Together." During the meeting, he shared the direction of the 8th popularly elected administration's education policies and listened to voices from the field.
In his opening remarks, Mayor Lee emphasized the importance of education, stating, "As Nelson Mandela said, 'Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,' and it is the most valuable investment for our children's future."
He went on to say, "Today's gathering is not just a venue for the city to unilaterally communicate its policies, but a place to listen to vivid voices from the educational field and seek solutions together. Let us work together to design effective education policies unique to Goyang."
During the meeting, several proposals were raised, including measures to link local care centers in the event of school aftercare program suspensions, the development of education policies unique to Goyang, and requests for expanded support for drone classes.
In response, Goyang Special City shared a variety of opinions and countermeasures, such as promoting interdepartmental consultations to address gaps in aftercare services, preparing citizen-centered policies in line with the purpose of the Special Education Development Zone, and developing drone education as a distinctive program unique to Goyang.
In particular, participants reaffirmed their commitment to educational cooperation through a performance in which they wrote education-related opinions on petal-shaped post-its and attached them to the "Goyang Education Flower Garden" board. Mayor Lee and Kim Najung, senior vice president of the School Operation Committee Council, also participated and signed together.
Meanwhile, Goyang Special City plans to hold an additional roundtable meeting with middle and high school operation committee members on July 22, actively reflecting field voices from all stages in the formulation of education policies.
