Jeollanam-do Institute of Health and Environment to Inspect 75 Water Purification Plants in 19 Cities and Counties
Notification to Local Governments After Assessing Compliance with Drinking Water Quality Standards
The Jeollanam-do Institute of Health and Environment (Director: Ahn Yangjun) will conduct water quality inspections at 75 water purification plants in 19 cities and counties over a two-month period until September to ensure the safety of drinking water.
This inspection aims to address residents' concerns about tap water, which have arisen due to sudden changes in water source quality caused by rising summer temperatures, monsoon rains, and drought.
Every year, the Jeollanam-do Institute of Health and Environment verifies the safety of tap water by jointly conducting water purification plant inspections with relevant departments from 19 cities and counties, excluding Naju, Muan, and Jangheung, which use regional water supply systems.
For this inspection, each city and county will collect samples from water sources, purified water, and household taps. The institute will then test and analyze the samples to determine whether they meet drinking water quality standards and will notify the respective local governments of the results.
If any water purification plant is found to exceed the standards, on-site inspections and detailed investigations will be conducted, followed by corrective actions. The institute plans to secure water quality safety through follow-up re-inspections.
In 2024, 6 out of 76 water purification plants exceeded the standards, mainly due to issues with microorganisms and total trihalomethanes (THMs). Corrective measures were taken for disinfection facilities and other relevant systems. All plants were found to be compliant with standards after re-inspection.
Park Hyeyoung, head of the Water Quality Analysis Division at the Jeollanam-do Institute of Health and Environment, stated, "We will ensure that residents can always drink tap water with peace of mind through thorough inspections from the source to the tap."
