"Yoon Complains About 'Small Cell' in Prison... His Sense of Privilege Knows No Bounds"

"How long will he continue to insult the people and enjoy his privileges?"

Democratic Party lawmaker Kang Deukgu criticized former President Yoon Sukyeol, who was recently re-arrested, saying, "His sense of privilege knows no bounds."

On July 14, Kang wrote on his Facebook page, "Even in prison, Yoon Sukyeol's sense of privilege knows no bounds, complaining about 'no exercise time' and 'the room being small.' Who knows what kind of grumbling we will hear from him today," he began.

He continued, "Yoon Sukyeol's attorney talks about human rights violations. It's almost as if Yoon Sukyeol is a human rights activist. The single cell of about 9.9 square meters, guaranteed individual exercise time, and amenities like a fan that Yoon currently enjoys are excessively generous treatment." He added, "Instead of being grateful and reflecting, all we hear are infuriating complaints, especially in this hot weather."

Kang further said, "How long does Yoon Sukyeol intend to insult the people and enjoy his privileges? He seems completely unaware of why he is in the detention center." He also compared former President Yoon with former Cho Kuk Innovation Party leader Cho Kuk. Kang praised, "Not long ago, I visited Cho Kuk and his attitude was completely different. He was studying, reflecting, looking back on himself, and even trying to be considerate of other inmates, treating them as equals. That image is still vivid in my mind."

Turning again to Yoon Sukyeol, Kang stated, "Instead of complaining about discomfort, you should first bow your head before the people. You must first reflect on the damage you caused to the Republic of Korea and the sacrifices made by others because of you and political prosecutors." He concluded, "Prison is not a place of privilege but a place for reflection. Quietly serve your sentence and prepare to disappear into history. That is what the times and the people demand. I hope you will at least undergo today's special prosecutor's investigation."

Previously, former President Yoon was sent back to Seoul Detention Center at around 2 a.m. on July 10, 124 days after his initial incarceration, when a new arrest warrant was issued. He is being held in a single cell of about 9.9 square meters, which is even smaller than the single cells where former Presidents Lee Myungbak and Park Geunhye were held. The cell is equipped with a sink, toilet, desk that doubles as a dining table, TV, and a folding blanket. However, there is no air conditioner; a fixed fan is used for cooling instead. After this news broke, it was reported that Seoul Detention Center received a flood of complaints from some of Yoon's supporters demanding better living conditions for him. These supporters are reportedly requesting the installation of an air conditioner in his cell and improved medical support.
